"For a long time, it had seemed to me that life was about to begin... real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business... then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." Alfred D. Souza

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive psychology is the science of optimal human functioning, psychological strengths and the positive aspects of life, such as well-being, optimism, happiness. It is more than just feeling good, it is about pursuing and experiencing a better life, learning how to flourish and developing psychological flexibility. When we are functioning well, we tend to feel good.

Positive psychology helps us appreciate that many people function well despite their problems and explores how this resilience occurs.

Positive psychology has developed approaches that emphasise hope, meaning and self-healing. Plus ways people can enhance trust, communication and altruism, develop work satisfaction and authentic involvement.

One of the founding aims of Positive Psychology was to offer a wealth of new research on optimal human functioning and positive emotions to counter-balance and offer an anti-thesis to the prior narrow focus on negative emotions, the 'dysfunctional' and the 'abnormal'.  The opposite end of the continuum.

Positive Psychology in Perspective

However, this means that, in itself, Positive Psychology can only ever provide a partial picture of human emotions.

Positive psychology has been criticised for being too individually focused and not paying enough attention to relational and cultural issues and a balanced view.

All of our emotions serve us in some way, and concentrating on so-called positive emotions whilst excluding or trying to avoid negative emotions leads to very biased and problematic positions.

Clearly, we need to be open to the entire spectrum of our emotional responses as this adds richness and meaning to our lives.

For example, when someone close to us dies it is important to feel sadness as this is a measure of what the person's loss means to us. Therefore, so-called negative emotions play an important role in any well-lived life.

The Problem with Happiness?

Happy is something we would all like to be. However, happiness is a fleeting emotion not a permanent state of being and chasing the emotion of happiness is problematic.

Research is showing that there are major problems with positive thinking and exclusively focusing on happiness seeking.

For example, there is a paradoxical effect involved in that seeking individual happiness can make you very miserable.

In contrast, choosing to focus on what is important to us seems to make all of the difference.

Attempting to live a rich and 'meaningful' life devoted to what matters takes us to a better place. A by-product of this can be increased feelings of well-being and happiness.

"Happiness is but a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond our grasp, but which, if you will sit quietly, may alight upon you." Nathaniel Hawthorne
