When should I seek help for health anxiety?
Health anxiety develops when you are preoccupied with either the fear of having, or the belief that you already have a serious physical illness based on your interpretation of bodily symptoms and despite medical examinations and reassurance.
You may develop convincing beliefs, such as: “I have cancer.” I have a serious brain disease.” I have heart disease.” “I have a serious illness the doctors have missed.” “I’m going to die.” “I have MS.” You may worry that bodily changes and symptoms are signs that something is wrong. This anxiety then feeds into other health-related worries, causing a vicious cycle of fears about health.
Health anxieties and worries become problematic when they are happening too often, persist despite health checks with your GP, or lead to obsessive checking and reassurance from other people and from the internet. If your health anxieties begin to cloud your judgement and thoughts, or give you significant stress, it’s worth seeking help.
Health anxiety is a very common and serious problem. Researchers estimate that between 30% to 80% of people who consult GP’s and hospital physicians present with physical symptoms for which there is no physical basis.
