CBT therapy is an effective form of counselling for anxiety, depression, trauma and stress
Aberdeen Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy works by helping you cope better through altering the interactions between the way you feel, the way you think, your body state, how you behave or react and your relationship to what is happening in your circumstances.
CBT has been rigorously tested in numerous research trials and is a recommended therapy for anxiety, depression, stress and other problems.
At Possibilities, we offer ‘enhanced’ CBT, a more contemporary and up-dated version that integrates advances in neuropsychology, mindfulness, solution and compassion-focused approaches, positive psychology and other respectful effective therapeutic methods, for your benefit.
How will CBT counselling benefit me?
In CBT therapy, you learn new skills and techniques to identify, change or let go of unhelpful ways of thinking, behaving and reacting that affect your emotions and body state. This leads to a reduction in your distress and an improved quality of life.
Any underlying issues contributing to problems, such as low self-esteem, trauma and contextual issues, such as relationship problems and the influence of past events, are also addressed.
Many people tell us they’ve “had CBT” and it didn’t work or they didn’t like it. This is usually because, in recent years; with the over-popularisation of CBT, dumbed-down and McDonaldised versions are often offered, and don’t usually work very well.
Even with good research outcomes, with standard CBT, there are ongoing issues with unacceptably high drop-out rates and relapse problems. So we can’t afford to be complacent.
Also, it is not just the therapy that is important. Of the many essentials, one crucial ingredient is the skill of the therapist offering CBT. For example, many people can play the guitar but there are few who play it well. This is also the case with CBT. The skills of the therapist are very important.
In order to improve the effectiveness, benefits and suitability of CBT for you, at Possibilities we offer ‘CBT enhanced’ with a number of different evidence-based therapies and methods. Our ‘enhanced’ CBT is adapted around you and offers more creative possibilities for you. This means we can enhance your ability to meet the challenges and complexities of your issues leading to more successful, completed therapy and reduced relapse rates.
At Possibilities, our ‘enhanced CBT’ is regularly upgraded as we’re constantly learning, revising and refining our approach in line with the very latest developments.
How long does CBT therapy take?
The number of CBT meetings required will depend on the severity and complexity of your difficulties and can range between 4 to 20 therapy sessions. Additional sessions are usually required for more challenging and complicated issues. At each step, we closely monitor progress and work together collaboratively with you.
Allow us to reassure you that professional help is at hand. We offer services that aim to reduce the fear and uncertainty about getting help. Arrange an initial consultation ‘taster’ session to discuss your needs, in privacy and comfort, to obtain a sense of how we help and for if this is the right direction for you.
And the day came when the risk (it took) to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
What our previous clients have said
I experienced severe trauma and developed a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which meant I wasn’t coping well with day to day life. With CBT Therapy at Possibilities, I’ve made a number of positive changes. It was a struggle at times but my psychotherapist helped me feel safe and capable as we worked through things. I’m now back at work and my confidence is growing. I have a life again. I’m so glad I took that scary first step and called. If you’re feeling unsure, I highly recommend you call them too.
