Men’s mental health problems are increasing. At Possibilities, we’re dedicated to providing the best help you require

Our men’s mental health counselling and ‘enhanced’ CBT therapy services for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire can help you better deal with anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, stress and relationship problems. With greater awareness, more men are seeking help and directly challenging social pressures to appear outwardly ‘strong’ and ‘coping’. Men are discovering that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. We’re all human, we all suffer from time to time and we all sometimes need a helping hand.

Will therapy and counselling help?

The research suggests that many men find a solution-focused approach that addresses personal goals more helpful than general counselling. We’ll help you understand the problems and show you the steps you need to take to make improvements.

“Wisdom, compassion, and courage are the three universally recognized moral qualities of men.” – Confucius.

Depression and suicide

It’s a sobering fact, but three in four suicides are carried out by men. What’s clear is that men are very vulnerable to pressure, emotional distress and more troubled by issues of status, competence, power and aggression.

“Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.” – James Carse, Professor of History.

Hiding your emotions and pretending to be ‘strong’ and competitive greatly contribute to significant health issues in the long-term and discourage many men from seeking help when they most need it for fear of appearing weak, vulnerable losers. Fortunately, more and more men are seeking help and seriously questioning these unhelpful gender expectations and the distorted unhelpful caricatures of masculinity syringed into our lives via social media and mainstream culture.

You can feel secure about seeking support at Possibilities because we’ll listen carefully to what you need and help you resolve your emotional issues. Therapy is much, much more than ‘just talking’.

What kind of issues?

We deal with a variety of different problems such as anger, trauma, communication, managing emotions and relationship issues plus coping with difficult life events, such as bereavement and abuse. Since every person has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, we prefer to approach each person and problem individually, adjusting the therapy to what works best for you.

Next Steps

Allow us to reassure you that professional help is at hand. We offer services that aim to reduce the fear and uncertainty about getting help. Arrange an initial consultation ‘taster’ session to discuss your needs, in privacy and comfort, to obtain a sense of how we help and for if this is the right direction for you.

And the day came when the risk (it took) to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
